The Ethical concerns with Ai

What has been done

On April 8, 2019, the EU’s expert board created guidelines for ai to ensure that it is trustworthy. In order to ensure this, The Eu has passed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that forces companies in Europe and companies that trade with Europe to comply with these guidelines. A year later, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) established an ai policy observatory. Based on this,The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in November 2021 which was the first global standard on AI ethics. All of these support human rights and global cooperation in order to grow the worlds trust in Ai. This is all only the beginning of Ai regulation because as it continues to advance, so will the regulations keeping it in line.

The UN's Ai Guidelines

The chart represents the 10 guidelines set out by the UN. Their goal was to make sure that Ai was not being used for anything dangerous but they did not want to put too many restrictions out of fear they would stop the development.

Theological Teaching

When discussing Ai and the Church's view on it, we should consider that we are made in God's image and that cannot be replicated. Ai is made in our image and we have power over it because God gave us dominion over the earth and Ai is just a tool for us. We should not avoid Ai, but use it for good and to help spread the word of God.

Basic scientific research, as well as applied research, is a significant expression of man's dominion over creation. Science and technology are precious resources when placed at the service of man and promote his integral development for the benefit of all. By themselves however they cannot disclose the meaning of existence and of human progress. Science and technology are ordered to man, from whom they take their origin and development; hence they find in the person and in his moral values both evidence of their purpose and awareness of their limits. (Catechism 2293)

Cardinal Micheal Czerny believes that Ai, like all things, has the potential for both good and evil. He mentions that we are the connecting factor that can make Ai a great tool for contributing to the good of all people. His view of its possible misuse in warfare was that it takes away the human responsibility for the death of another and doesn't have the conscience to know what it's doing.

Pope Francis talked about Ai in his speech for World Communications Day when he said that it can have great effects on many different industries, but it can also have a grave impact if we rely on or misuse it. His vision for Ai is one of peace which is why the Vatican is involved in the discussions around this idea. He also claims that we should all proactively learn about Ai so that we are informed of its possibilities.
